What is Earthquake Insurance?

Earthquake insurance protects your home and belongings from the damage that occurs when an earthquake hits. Like flooding, earthquake coverage is excluded from most comprehensive home insurance policies.

Who Needs It?

Earthquake insurance usually comes with a fairly high deductible, so this insurance may not be on your radar unless your home resides in an area where earthquakes are likely. Still, all 50 states are susceptible to earthquakes, and damages caused by these natural disasters are not covered by your homeowner’s insurance. Adding earthquake insurance to your policy provides extra protection in case your home is damaged — or completely destroyed — by an earthquake. The rate for your deductible depends on your home’s location, its building materials, and the likelihood of an earthquake.

If you purchase earthquake insurance from one of our carriers, they will cover some or all of the following:

  • All damage to your home
  • Damage to other, non-business structures on your property
  • Damages to personal property
  • Increased costs to meet current building codes or stabilize land under your home
  • Cost to remove debris
  • Living expenses while your home is under repair

Extra Protection for Your Home

Keep in mind that earthquake insurance won’t cover fire or flood damage, even if the fire or flood was caused by an earthquake. However, when earthquake insurance is added to your home and flood policies, there is no disaster that you aren’t protected against. If you’re interested in adding extra protection to your home and family in case of an earthquake, talk to one of our agents today about purchasing a policy.
